The center is open Thursdays from Noon to 3 pm.
Directions to the Recycling Center
We are located in the Tribe’s EPA/Utility Building. To locate the center from Hopland, take highway 175 east
approximately 3.5 miles to the Reservation. Turn left onto Nokomis Road at the Sho Ka Wah Casino sign. Go one
block and turn right into the first driveway.
Certification of the Center
Tribal EPA staff worked closely with the California Recycling Certification program to certify the Tribal Recycling
Center. Certification is important because it allows recycling centers to take recycled materials to State
processing centers for reimbursement. In order to protect Tribal sovereignty, the Hopland Tribe worked out an
intergovernmental agreement with the State addressing state inspections of the Center and other issues.
Within the first few months, the Tribe recycled 2,400 pounds of aluminum, 1,300 pounds of plastic, and 3,000
pounds of glass. Materials are transported by trailer to a processing center in Hayward.
The average American discards seven and a half pounds of garbage every day. This garbage goes mostly to landfills,
where it's compacted and buried. The more we recycle, the less garbage winds up in our landfills and
incineration plants. We all need to do our part.
Other Recycling Program Services
The Tribal recycling program also includes recycling of tires, appliances, batteries and hazardous materials such as
used oil and paint. EPA staff assist elders and others to transport materials as needed. The Tribe sponsors annual
Reservation-wide spring clean-ups and creek clean-ups. The Tribe sponsors a junk car removal every few years,
based on community need and available funding.
Establishment of the Tribal Recycling Program has been funded by USEPA’s General Assistance Program (GAP),
along with the Waste Management Division’s Resource Conservation and Hazardous Waste programs.

First Recycling Center Customer
In March, 2006, the Hopland Band of Pomo Indians celebrated the
grand opening of a new buy-back recycling center, paying CRV
(Cash Refund Value) to community recyclers who bring in their
glass, plastic and aluminum beverage containers.
The recycling center is called the Lálil Daqáw Pomo Recycling
Center, which means “to give back” or “to return” in the Hopland
Pomo dialect.
