The Tribal Council of the Hopland Band of Pomo Indians adopted eight Environmental Protection Codes in 2006. The new Environmental Protection Codes were drafted to promote the peace, health, safety and general welfare of residents; they apply equally to everyone on the Reservation – both Tribal and non-Tribal. The Codes confirm that the Tribe is a sovereign nation governing its land and people, and provide that the Tribal EPA and Tribal Police may conduct enforcement activities. Tribal EPA staff are currently working on Enforcement Policies and Procedures to implement the codes.
As we work towards implementation of the codes, the goal of the Tribal EPA will be to educate the community and provide compliance assistance; however, warnings, citations, and fines will be issued as necessary to protect the environment. Ultimately, an action may be filed in Tribal Court seeking damages from those who violate Tribal law.
